Missing canoeist found dead in lake north of Duluth

A 61-year-old man reported overdue from a canoe trip on a lake north of Duluth was found dead Tuesday evening by search crews. The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of his family.

A 61-year-old man reported overdue from a canoe trip on a lake north of Duluth was found dead Tuesday evening by search crews.

The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of his family.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that an overdue canoeist was reported Tuesday evening at Briar Lake in North Star Township, about 30 miles north-northeast of Duluth. The Sheriff’s Office responded along with the St. Louis County Rescue Squad and North Star First Responders.

The missing canoeist’s vehicle was located at a public access point on the lake, and his empty canoe was found by a resident across the lake. Search crews then found the man’s body in the lake.

The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
