N.D. pantries, shelters get tons of produce

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Agriculture Department says more than 361,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables made its way to food pantries and homeless shelters across the state through a new program.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Agriculture Department says more than 361,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables made its way to food pantries and homeless shelters across the state through a new program.

The Hunger Free North Dakota Garden Program asks gardeners and other growers to donate a portion of their harvest.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says his department knew it could count on the generosity of gardeners to make the program work. He says not all donations were recorded, and he thinks the total might be more than 500,000 pounds of produce.

Goehring also participated, harvesting nearly 7,000 pounds of sweet corn for the program on his farm near Menoken.
