Expansion of UND med school didn't make budget

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — For the past year University of North Dakota administrators have been promoting an expansion of the UND medical school as a way to help ease a future doctor shortage.

The project didn't make it into Gov. Jack Dalrymple's budget recommendations to the Legislature.

The medical school's plan called for spending more than $25 million on a new health sciences building on the UND campus. The proposal included an increase in the medical school's budget of almost 70 percent over six years.

Grand Forks state Sen. Mac Schneider says it will be difficult to persuade the Legislature to approve the project anyway, because of its cost.

Dalrymple's budget proposal does include construction of an $18 million computer center on UND's campus.
