N.D. elk hunters reminded of restrictions

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota wildlife officials are reminding hunters with unfilled any-elk licenses in units adjacent to Theodore Roosevelt National Park that their licenses are restricted to antlerless elk only from Jan. 1-21.

The state Game and Fish Department amended the 2010 bighorn sheep, elk and moose proclamation by extending the elk season to Jan. 21 in units E3 and E4. The closing date coincides with the National Park Service's effort to reduce the park's elk population because the herd is getting too big.

Wildlife officials say extending the season outside the park increases the chance more elk will be killed and diminishes the likelihood of elk moving from the park to forage supplies of adjacent landowners.
