GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Shoppers are loading up on University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux merchandise before it becomes a thing of the past.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that diehard UND fans have spent much of the year stocking up on everything from sweatshirts and hats to hitch covers and carafes.

Sioux Shop Manager Jason Carlson says if it's adorned with the Fighting Sioux image, it's in high demand this holiday season.

In October, UND stopped approving designs for new merchandise bearing the logo or nickname. It's part of the university's transition from its Fighting Sioux nickname, which will be retired in 2011.

Carlson says one UND student was looking ahead. He says she bought Fighting Sioux baby clothing for the children she plans to have someday.
