VELVA, N.D. (AP) — The Velva High School Band will perform as the Governor's Band during the opening ceremony of the 2011 North Dakota Legislature.

Band director Bob Demke tells the Minot Daily News that the school is thrilled, but the band will have to call some special rehearsals to practice and pick out its musical selections.

The ceremony at the state Capitol is planned for 1 p.m. on Jan. 4.

The band has 56 students in grades 9 through 12. Most of the teenagers have never been to the Capitol during the session.
