BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State officials say alcohol compliance checks conducted by law officers show that most businesses in North Dakota are working to prevent sales to minors.

The Department of Human Services says bars and restaurants had a 93 percent compliance rate over a year's time, and liquor stores had an 89 percent compliance rate.

Department specialist Chad Eagleson says restricting access to alcohol is an effective way to curb underage drinking.

Fifty-three law enforcement agencies working with underage youth visited more than 700 liquor stores, restaurants and bars between July 2009 and July 2010 to check for compliance with laws that prohibit alcohol sales to people under age 21.
