Schmitz to be sworn in Friday

Jay A. Schmitz will be sworn in as the newest Southeast Judicial District Court judge in an investiture ceremony with Judge John T. Paulson presiding. The ceremony will be held at the Barnes County Courthouse, Valley City, at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The oath of office and presentation of the judge’s robe will be made by the Honorable Gerald W. ValdeWalle chief justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court, assisted by Donna Schmitz, Schmitz’s wife, and Mary Schmitz, his mother. VandeWalle will provide remarks.

Schmitz’s gavel will be presented by Executive Director of the State Bar Association William A. Neumann, with remarks on behalf of the State Bar.

Schmitz was elected to serve as a Barnes County District Court judge on Nov. 2. Schmitz has a broad legal practice which includes eight years as a Stutsman County assistant state’s attorney and 10 years in private practice focusing primarily on civil litigation, real estate and criminal defense.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony which will be held at the Barnes County Courthouse. A reception will follow at the Valley City Country Club. All are welcome.
