Belcourt man sentenced to 14 years for sex abuse

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A judge says a Belcourt man must serve 14 years in prison on a sex abuse charge.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A judge says a Belcourt man must serve 14 years in prison on a sex abuse charge.

Garrett DeCoteau was convicted in federal court of aggravated sexual abuse. Authorities say DeCoteau engaged in a sexual act with his victim after repeatedly threatening and assaulting her at her home on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland ordered the 36-year-old DeCoteau to pay nearly $6,500 in restitution and register as a sex offender.

DeCoteau faced a maximum sentence of life in prison.
