Corps: Reservoirs will be ready for spring runoff

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers said it didn't quite reach its goal in removing flood water stored in the Missouri River reservoirs by the end of 2010, but it expects to be there by March 1.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers said it didn't quite reach its goal in removing flood water stored in the Missouri River reservoirs by the end of 2010, but it expects to be there by March 1.

Runoff last year was about 54 percent above normal, so the corps had to bump up its releases late in the year to lower the lakes so they can handle this year's runoff.

An agency official said the level of Fort Peck Reservoir in Montana and Garrison Reservoir in North Dakota might be a bit higher than desired in spring, but the system should be ready to handle runoff from snowmelt and rain.
