Proposal includes $5M for east Devils Lake flood

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawmakers are reviewing a proposal to build a structure on the east end of Devils Lake to prevent an uncontrolled flow of water into the Sheyenne River.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota lawmakers are reviewing a proposal to build a structure on the east end of Devils Lake to prevent an uncontrolled flow of water into the Sheyenne River.

The North Dakota Senate's Natural Resources Committee is hearing the bill Thursday. It provides $5 million for the project.

As the lake rises, there's a risk that water from the lake's east end will flow naturally into the Sheyenne River. State officials say an uncontrolled flow would be disastrous.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple's budget proposal includes money for the structure, and it calls for building a water outlet on Devils Lake's east end.

The outlet proposal is drawing opposition from people who live near the Sheyenne River, because water from the lake's east end is very high in sulfates.
