Ostlie, Marler break records

Jamestown High School’s Landon Ostlie and Willy Marler shattered a pair of records during the Blue Jay boys’ swimming dual vs. Bismarck Century in Jamestown on Thursday night. Ostlie bested his own team record in the 100-yard butterfly by winning the event in a time of 55.94. The Jamestown senior set the bar last season with a previous best time of 56.01. Marler, a Jamestown junior, already held the team record in the 100 freestyle, which he set one year ago with a time of 48.25. But he has had his eyes set on breaking the JHS pool record all season, which he accomplished against the Patriots.

The JHS pool record in the 100 freestyle was set by Minot’s Brandon Ladendorf during the boys’ state championships back in 2006, the pool’s first season in use.

Marler shaved nearly two-tenths off of Ladnedorf’s time of 48.85 to set a new record in an event winning time of 48.66.

“Willy wanted the 100 (freestyle) pool record for awhile now. He played with it a lot last year and tried really hard, but it just eluded him by a small amount,” JHS coach Marney Shirley said. “He went out with a mission.

“Landon’s was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ We weren’t quite expecting it,” Shirley added. “Landon’s best times normally come at the end of the season. It was fun to see both of them get it.”

The Patriots went on to outscore the Blue Jays 111-72 to win the meet, mostly behind solid relay finishes. Bismarck Century swept all three, included a 1-2 finish in the 200 individual medley relay.

“They just have a little bit better depth. They took all three relays and that was the difference,” Shirley said. “They’re a program we’re trying to model. They went out and really recruited, like our kids have been doing, to get younger kids in that program and swim.

“That’s what we’re doing and they’re just a step ahead of us.”

Marler also kept up his strong showing in the 200 freestyle, winning that event in a time of 1:53.31, while Ostlie went on to dominate the competition in the 100 backstroke.

Ostlie’s winning time of 58.23 in that event was nearly 10 seconds ahead of second place running Zach Grosz of Bismarck Century (1:07.71).

Jamestown’s Chasen Miller won the 200 individual medley with a swim of 2:16.31 and took second in the 500 freestyle (5:19.40). Blue Jay sophomore Hunter Boehm qualified for state in the 50 freestyle with a second-place time 25.60.

Jamestown’s Grant Curtis and Colt Rasmussen took home places in events they competed in for the first time on Thursday. Curtis placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:22.94), while Rasmussen placed sixth in the 500 freestyle (6:04.50).

The Blue Jays will be back in the pool on Saturday, when they travel to Grand Forks to compete at the UND Invite.

“Not all the teams in North Dakota will be there, but a majority will be,” Shirley said. “It will be a nice opportunity to see some teams we haven’t seen yet.”
