Allens seeking to unite community through prayer

A new group in Jamestown seeks to unite members of the community in prayer. The Jamestown Community Prayer group is nondenominational and doesn’t require membership, church affiliation or even a dress code, organizers said. It’s just a way for concerned members of the community to speak to God together. Organizers Greg and Mary Allen established the group to give the community an opportunity to pray about various issues and organizations in Jamestown like education, government and families. It’s not a political forum though, Greg said, but only quiet prayer and a way to ask God for help. “Anything good can be improved upon,” he said, saying Jamestown is already a good place to live and raise a family.

The group’s first meeting is 10 a.m. Saturday. Meetings last 30 minutes and those attending are invited to come as they are, Greg said, even in soiled gardening clothes or covered in paint from the latest remodel.

“We’re going to be strict about the time,” Greg said. “We’re not going to go over.”

Greg said he typically reserves his Saturday mornings for prayer, so inviting the community to join him is an extension of that.

“He just wants to invite everyone to his party,” Mary said.

Each of 2011’s 13 meetings is at a different church, but even those who don’t attend church at all should feel welcome, Allen said.

The first prayer group is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 22 at First Church of the Nazarene, 1307 Sixth Ave. S.E.
