N.D. oil patch town rejects rezoning request

City leaders in the western North Dakota oil patch town of Belfield have denied a request to rezone a dozen lots from agricultural or industrial use to residential.

BELFIELD, N.D. (AP) — City leaders in the western North Dakota oil patch town of Belfield have denied a request to rezone a dozen lots from agricultural or industrial use to residential.

Resident Ken Stoppleworth had made the request. His lawyer says Stoppleworth is disappointed because he thought new housing would bring in more families.

The Dickinson Press reports that some residents were worried about overdeveloping the town. Zoning board member Ken Solberg says there are several vacant lots and houses.

Mayor Leo Schneider says the town is still feeling the effects of the oil bust in the 1980s.
