Belcourt battles Ox Creek flooding

Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa officials are battling flooding in Belcourt.

BELCOURT, N.D. (AP) — Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa officials are battling flooding in Belcourt.

Water from the swollen Ox Creek flowed through the center of town Wednesday, and officials used sandbags to protect buildings including a hospital. Kidney dialysis patients were transferred to Minot. U.S. Highway 281 through town was closed to traffic.

Tribal Emergency Manager Anita Blue tells the Minot Daily News that a couple hundred volunteers turned out to help with the sandbagging effort. No immediate damage was reported.

U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad issued a statement saying he's monitoring the situation.
