Jays fall at state hockey tournament

Top-seeded Grand Forks Red River defeated Jamestown 7-1 in opening-round action at the state hockey tournament at Ralph Engelstad Arena Thursday night.

Top-seeded Grand Forks Red River defeated Jamestown 7-1 in opening-round action at the state hockey tournament at Ralph Engelstad Arena Thursday night.

The Roughriders (19-6) scored three goals in the first period, one in the second and three more in the third.

The Blue Jays, appearing in the state tournament for the first time since 1999, got within 2-1 on a goal by Trevor Schmitt late in the opening frame, but the Roughriders got a goal from Casey Fugleberg, who had a hat trick, to make it 3-1 after 17 minutes.

Travis Ingstad and Andrew Yatskis assisted on Schmitt's goal.

The Blue Jays were outshot 38-18. Tygy Yatskis had 35 saves.

The Blue Jays (10-14-1) will face the loser of the Minot/West Fargo game in a loser-out contest on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
