Kalk’s Senate race finding support

BISMARCK (AP) — Public Service Commissioner Brian Kalk is exploring whether to run for the U.S. Senate next year, and he says he’s spoken to many Republicans who like the idea.
Incumbent Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad said he won’t seek re-election next year, and Kalk is expecting as many as a half-dozen Republicans to get into the race to succeed Conrad.
Kalk has formed an exploratory committee to gauge support for a Senate run. He attended a number of Lincoln Day dinners earlier this month and says a number of people told him they were interested in volunteering.
Kalk said he doesn’t have any time frame for declaring himself an official candidate. He said the North Dakota Legislature has to finish up first.
