Blumhardt, Field roll in openers

Jamestown College’s Sean Blumhardt, Aaron Field, B.J. Mosley, Anthony Clay and Sam Brown each won their opening matches at the NAIA national wrestling tournament on Thursday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Blumhardt and Field got byes in the first round, and remain alive for national titles. Mosley and Clay started with wins, but they were beaten in their second matches.

Jamestown College’s Sean Blumhardt, Aaron Field, B.J. Mosley, Anthony Clay and Sam Brown each won their opening matches at the NAIA national wrestling tournament on Thursday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Blumhardt and Field got byes in the first round, and remain alive for national titles. Mosley and Clay started with wins, but they were beaten in their second matches.

Blumhardt, a junior, won his ninth straight match at 125 pounds, edging Myron Bradbury of Lindsey Wilson College, 5-3. The Ellendale native will face Jason Moorhouse of Menlo in the quarterfinals today.

Field, like Blumhardt, was seeded. The senior heavyweight got Ray Johnson of York and routed him 13-5 for a spot in the quarterfinals today. He’ll meet Travis Ewart of Missouri Valley.

Mosley topped Kody Reed of MSU-Northern 12-7 in the opening round at 197, but then fell to Jeff Roman of Waldorf, 5-1.

At 174, Clay toppled Hannibal-LaGrange’s Dan Capp 8-5 to start, but then was defeated by technical fall by No. 1 seeded Chris Chionuma of Lindenwood, 21-6.

Brown started his day with a 7-4 win over Cody Miller of MSU-Northern at 157, but then ran into top-seeded Corey Bleaken of Cumberland and fell, 17-4.

Pat Nord (165), Jarad Miller (133) an J.J. Gubler (149) fell into wrestlebacks after dropping their opening matches.

Overall, the Jimmies are tied for 19th place with 8 points, the same total as Minot State.

Missouri Valley and Notre Dame (Ohio) each have 27 points to lead. Southern Oregon’s 26 are third.

The meet resumes today at 10:30 a.m. and concludes on Saturday.
