BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota assistant attorney general was honored for his role in subduing a man who pulled a pistol after a jury convicted him of two felony sex crimes.
The North Dakota House and Senate both approved resolutions Friday praising Jonathan Byers for his heroism.
The incident happened Feb. 4 at the Adams County courthouse in Hettinger.
Byers had been prosecuting Vicente Chacano for sexually molesting a girl younger than 15. After he was convicted, Chacano pulled a pistol. The gun didn't fire and no one was injured.
Witnesses say Byers grabbed the defendant. Byers and two law officers helped tackle the man and take away his gun.
Jamestown Sen. David Nething says Byers is an example of the service of all state employees.
