BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say about 620 bison from an impounded herd on the North Dakota-South Dakota will be sold at a livestock auction.

Authorities impounded as many as 6,000 bison at a ranch belonging to real estate developer Maurice Wilder, of Clearwater, Fla., on Feb 2. A judge ordered the impoundment after some of the animals were found dead and many others were malnourished.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that the March 26 sale will involve 600 heifers and 20 bulls, and represents an agreement between South Dakota officials and Wilder.

South Dakota State Veterinarian Dustin Odekoven says an investigation is ongoing.

Corson (S.D.) County Sheriff Keith Gall says he continues to provide daily oversight of the ranch operation
