SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Bird watchers say that white pelicans are becoming a more common sight around Indiana these days.
Indiana Dunes State Park naturalist Brad Bumgardner tells the South Bend Tribune that the birds have shown up in progressively larger numbers over the past decade. He says their normal migration route tends to cut through southern Illinois, but has moved east. They are traveling from winter homes along the Gulf Coast and to summer grounds between Wisconsin and the Dakotas and central Canada.
The pelicans have been spotted recently near the northern Indiana communities of Morocco, Rochester and North Liberty.
Bird watcher John Cassady of Elkhart said this is the peak time to see the pelicans. He said they could continue to migrate throughout April.
