N.D. man sentenced on assault charge

U.S. Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that on April 7, Joel C. Gohl, 35, of Cannonball, N.D., was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Patrick A. Conmy on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that on April 7, Joel C. Gohl, 35, of Cannonball, N.D., was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Patrick A. Conmy on a charge of assault with a dangerous

weapon. Gohl pleaded guilty to the charge on Dec. 1.

Conmy sentenced Gohl to two years and nine months in federal prison, to be

followed by three years of supervised release. Gohl was ordered to pay restitution of $46,280 and to pay a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victim’s Fund.

On Feb. 16, 2010, Gohl and the victim were together consuming alcoholic

beverages at Gohl’s home in Cannonball. When Gohl and the victim began to argue, Gohl requested the victim leave the residence. The victim did not comply and swung at Gohl. Gohl then stabbed the victim in the chest with a knife, authorities said.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Indian Affairs - Standing Rock Agency.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Volk prosecuted the case.
