SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Runoff into the Missouri River system this year is expected to exceed normal but fall below last year’s near record amount.
The Army Corps of Engineers said mountain snowpack is 112 to 116 percent of normal. Runoff from the mountain snow is a major component of runoff into the upper river system each year.
The corps forecasts runoff this year of 33.8 million acre-feet, which would be 36 percent above normal. The system took in 38.8 million acre-feet of water last year.
An acre-foot of water is the amount needed to cover an acre 1 foot deep.
Last year’s runoff into the Missouri River system was the third highest in 113 years of record keeping.
