School archery program drawing interest in N.D.

The state Game and Fish Department says the number of North Dakota students participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program more than doubled in a year's time.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The state Game and Fish Department says the number of North Dakota students participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program more than doubled in a year's time.

State program coordinator Jeff Long says 295 student archers took part in this year's state tournament in Bismarck last month, compared with 143 in 2010. The first state tournament in 2009 drew 71 students.

The national program helps schools incorporate archery target shooting into physical education classes. Game and Fish provides grants to help schools buy equipment.

Top teams and individuals can move on to national competition.
