CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — American skipper Brad Van Liew has won the fourth leg of the Velux 5 Oceans race.

Van Liew crossed the finish line near Charleston Harbor just before 5 p.m. Tuesday. It took him 23 days to sail the 5,700-mile leg from Punta del Este, Uruguay.

Van Liew has won all stages of the around-the-world race with one leg to go.

He said from his boat as it was coming into Charleston that it was important to him to win this leg because he lives in the city. A small group of boats met him at the finish line.

The next closest competitor is expected to arrive in Charleston late Wednesday.

They leave next month for France where the race began last year.
