The 2011 edition of Cleanup Week in Jamestown is set for May 16 through 20.

The schedule was announced during the Jamestown Public Works Committee meeting on Thursday. The annual event allows residents to place items that would not normally be picked up out on the street for removal and disposal by the city.

Rules and guidelines will be issued later. The schedule corresponds with the start of the seasonal workers the city public works department employs each summer, said Reed Schwartzkopf, city engineer.

The committee also authorized a public hearing concerning the curbside pickup of recyclables as part of the May 2 council meeting.

“We’ve had a meeting on this but now we need to give the public a chance to comment,” said Katie Andersen, Jamestown mayor.

Andersen suggested the board would not make an immediate decision but wanted to get public input on how to proceed.

The committee also approved up to $500 for the storm water drain stenciling project performed by the Jamestown Middle School Omega House each spring. The students paint images of fish on the storm water drain structures built into the street curbs to indicate the water going into the drain ends up in the river. Schwartzkopf said the stencils are part a required part of the city’s storm water plan.

The committee authorized the purchase of a one-ton truck from R.M. Stoudt, Inc. and a backhoe from Titan Machinery. They forwarded without recommendation requests to rebid several other pieces of equipment because all bids received were irregular or incomplete.
