Teacher pension deadlock broken

A deadlock over North Dakota teacher pension fund contributions has been broken. Now, lawmakers will find out whether the state House will support the result.

BISMARCK (AP) — A deadlock over North Dakota teacher pension fund contributions has been broken. Now, lawmakers will find out whether the state House will support the result.

The North Dakota House and Senate have both approved a plan to raise teacher pension contributions.

They’re arguing about whether school boards should have the option of negotiating whether the teacher or the school pays the increased share of the pension contribution.

Many North Dakota school districts pay the teacher’s pension share instead of giving a salary increase.

House negotiators wanted to put the teachers’ share of the new pension increase off limits in contract talks.

But on Friday, House negotiators agreed to let the increase be part of contract bargaining.

The House and Senate will vote on the plan next week.
