After about three years as public service commissioner, Brian Kalk announced his run for U.S. Senate Thursday.
Kalk visited about 20 towns throughout the state Thursday including Jamestown.
A Republican, Kalk was elected public service commissioner in 2008. He grew up in Bottineau, N.D., served in the Marines for 20 years and was a professor at North Dakota State University.
“I’m a believer in the American dream because I’ve had a chance to live it,” he said to an audience of about a dozen people.
Kalk said the current system in Washington is “broken” and he can help find solutions. Some of the problems include energy regulations, federal debt and national security.
“The way we’re doing things has got to end,” he said.
Current Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., is not seeking re-election.
That makes his road to the Senate seat easier, Kalk said, but not without challenges. He expects other Republicans to take interest in the office as well.
Recently elected Rep. Rick Berg has been rumored to run, although he remains silent about his intentions.
“I fully anticipate a good convention battle,” Kalk said, adding “but we’re going to win.”
