Grand Forks voters reject library tax

Grand Forks residents have soundly defeated the idea of raising the city sales tax to fund a new library.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Grand Forks residents have soundly defeated the idea of raising the city sales tax to fund a new library.

City officials say Tuesday's vote was 38 percent in favor and 62 percent against raising the tax by 1 percent for three years. More than 7,200 people voted.

Supporters said the existing library is inadequate. Opponents said technology will make libraries less useful in the future, and they also objected to the cost. The Grand Forks Herald reports that the tax would have raised an estimated $21 million.
