BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Jack Dalrymple has declared a winter storm emergency for western North Dakota in the wake of the weekend blizzard that downed hundreds of power poles and cut electricity to about 30,000 people.
Power has been restored to most but officials say it could be another week and a half before everyone is out of the dark. Dalrymple says at least 1,500 power poles and more than 60 transmission towers remain down.
Dalrymple says teams will be assessing damage in the region in preparation for a request for a presidential disaster declaration.
In the meantime, the governor has waived service hour and weight restrictions for commercial truck drivers who are helping in the recovery.
