Burleigh County officer suspended with pay

BISMARCK (AP) — Burleigh County Sheriff Pat Heinert says an officer has been suspended with pay while authorities investigate whether an inmate was assaulted on his way into the county jail.

Carlos Mendez Jr. saidhe was assaulted on March 27 after his arrest for allegedly kicking and spitting on a Bismarck police officer. The Bismarck Tribune reported that the state crime bureau investigated and turned the results of the probe over to prosecutors on the county level who are reviewing it.

Heinert said his department also is doing an internal investigation. He did not name the officer who has been suspended. Police

Lt. Randy Ziegler said he’s looking into a citizen complaint of misconduct filed against two officers but neither has been removed from duty.
