Corps to boost Missouri River discharges

The Army Corps of Engineers said it needs to release more water from Missouri River reservoirs because there's been so much runoff already this year and more is expected from mountain snowmelt.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers said it needs to release more water from Missouri River reservoirs because there's been so much runoff already this year and more is expected from mountain snowmelt.

The corps said releases from Gavins Point Dam in southeast South Dakota will jump to 57,500 cubic feet per second. That's more than double the normal discharge rate at the southernmost dam on the system.

The corps said releases from the other five reservoirs also will be increased to move water through the system. It says spillways and outlet tunnels often will be used because the power plants can't handle the volume of water that needs to be discharged.
