Basin cuts back on electrical production

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Basin Electric Power Cooperative said it's temporarily taken a coal-fired generating unit off line in North Dakota because the Missouri River dams are producing plenty of electricity from higher discharge rates.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Basin Electric Power Cooperative said it's temporarily taken a coal-fired generating unit off line in North Dakota because the Missouri River dams are producing plenty of electricity from higher discharge rates.

Basin spokesman Daryl Hill told the Bismarck Tribune that its Antelope Valley Station Unit 1 went off line Saturday and won't be restarted until Tuesday, pending electric demand.

Hill said a second generating unit at Antelope Valley in Mercer County is on line and available.

The Army Corps of Engineers has stepped up discharges from Missouri River lakes because of heavy runoff from rain and mountain snowmelt.
