Letter to the editor: Berg’s votes show he is not helping poor, middle class

When it was pointed out last year that, as a state legislator, Rick Berg voted to end Social Security as we know it, not many people believed it. It was the heat of a nasty campaign and Berg’s vote really didn’t mean much since he was only a state legislator when he cast it.

But now he’s in Congress and his votes mean a little bit more. So when he stood 100 percent with a guy named Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who crafted a budget that can honestly be described as un-Christian, I started wondering if people would believe what Berg is about now.

Berg voted to turn Medicare into a terribly underfunded voucher program and leave the elderly to fend for themselves against the health insurance industry. Berg and Ryan make it worse by using the money they cut from Medicare in order to pay for tax breaks for the wealthiest among us.

So now Berg wants to be a U.S. senator. Will we turn a blind eye to the fact that he wants to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and middle class or will we finally wake up and say we’ve had enough?
