Gradual boost in water releases from Garrison Dam

The Army Corps of Engineers plans to increase water releases from the Missouri River's Garrison Dam to 105,000 cubic feet per second during the next month.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers plans to increase water releases from the Missouri River's Garrison Dam to 105,000 cubic feet per second during the next month.

Residents of Bismarck and Mandan are being told to prepare for a river stage of 20 feet, which is 4 feet above flood stage. The river is now close to 16 feet.

North Dakota National Guard Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk (SPRIN’-suh-NAH’-tik) says the increases are being done gradually to allow officials to measure their impact.

The Lake Sakakawea reservoir is almost full, and large amounts of water are flowing into the lake from rains in eastern Montana and elsewhere.

The big rises in water releases came suddenly this week, and Sprynczynatyk says a lot of work has gone into the response.
