BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Rain on Monday slowed work at sandbag sites in Bismarck-Mandan, and officials said the need for volunteers was more urgent than ever.
National Guard soldiers who have been operating sandbag machines since last Thursday are being reassigned to other parts of the fight against the flooding Missouri River because of their technical expertise, and people are needed to help run those machines and carry bags.
Bismarck has three sandbag sites. Officials say a total of about 220 people are needed, and there are jobs for people of all ages and abilities.
Bismarck's goal is to have 4 million sandbags in place by Thursday. State officials say double that will be needed to shore up flood-prone sections of the Bismarck area.
