Carlson cited for academic award

NDSU track star Whitney Carlson has been named to the 2011 Academic All-District First team. Carlson, who carries a 4.0 GPA in zoology, earned the award for the third straight season. She will be attending dental school in the fall.

Carlson, who carries a 4.0 GPA in zoology, earned the award for the third straight season. She will be attending dental school in the fall.

The Buchanan native is competing in the NCAA Championships beginning Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa, and is qualified in both the long jump and the heptathlon.

She’s also already qualified to compete in the U.S. Championships June 22-28 in Eugene, Ore.

Carlson, a senior, won the outdoor Summit League titles in the long jump, 100 meter hurdles, 400 hurdles and heptathlon, and was named MVP of the Summit League in both field and track.
