VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — Two inmates fled the Barnes County Jail late Monday night by kicking open a fire escape door.
Sheriff Randy McClaflin tells the Valley City Times-Record that 21-year-old Travis James Dethlefs and 28-year-old Ryan Eugene Thomas were cleaning a walkway at a cell block around 10 p.m. when they escaped.
McClaflin says two corrections officers had been providing the inmates with cleaning supplies.
Authorities say Dethlefs is from Carrington and was in jail for a probation revocation. He has prior convictions for possession of marijuana, theft and burglary.
Thomas is from Mandan and was being held on several Morton County warrants. He has prior convictions that include possession of marijuana, fleeing an officer and aggravated assault.
Thomas also was convicted of escape from the Burleigh County Detention Center in 2007.
