Elks open season with tourney win

The Jamestown Elks opened the season by winning a tournament in Brookings, S.D., last weekend. The Elks outscored their opponents 25-4 in the tournament.

In the opener, Paul Roers fired a complete-game shutout, striking out 11 Redfield hitters in a 3-0 win. Boya Quichocho went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. P.J. Pina also had two hits.

The Elks had no trouble with the Carney (Neb.) Gamblers in the semifinals as Gaige Dunn fanned 12 hitters in their 12-0 win. Dave Sauter went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs. Nick Meehan had two hits and two RBIs, while Max Boe was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs.

Sauter had three more hits in the title game as the Elks topped the Moorhead Brewers, 10-4. Tim Spivey and Boe also had two hits. Boe tripled and scored three times. Matt Wawers earned the win on the mound for the Elks, who host the Moorhead Brewers tonight at 7 p.m. at Jack Brown Stadium.
