MOORHEAD, Minn. — Police here believe a medical issue led to a driver crashing his car into the FM Printing & Office Supply Co. building at 710 Main Ave. just before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
A witness told police the Ford Tempo came across Veterans Memorial Bridge from Fargo and began weaving erratically at about Fifth Street in Moorhead, ultimately driving in the opposite lanes before crashing head-on into the corner of the building at an estimated 45 to 50 mph, Lt. Joel Scharf said.
Firefighters and an F-M Ambulance crew removed the driver from the car on a backboard. He was taken to Sanford Medical Center with unknown injuries, but he was conscious, Scharf said.
The driver’s name wasn’t available Wednesday.
The initial dispatch call reported that the man had been feeling dizzy before the crash, and Scharf said it appears a medical issue led to the crash. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor, he said.
The car was totaled, but the corner of the brick-and-block building didn’t appear to be damaged. Two people inside the business at the time of the crash said they didn’t hear or feel the car hit the building.
Scharf said it was fortunate the car struck the building and not a vehicle or pedestrian.
The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead is owned by Forum Communications Co.
