ND West Nile surveillance program starts
North Dakota's Health Department has started its annual surveillance for West Nile virus.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Health Department has started its annual surveillance for West Nile virus.
The department works with several local, state, federal and private agencies. The surveillance program involves trapping and testing mosquitoes, testing sick horses and dead birds, and monitoring illness in people.
Epidemiologist Michelle Feist (fyst) says flooding in North Dakota means there might be more mosquitoes, but officials can't predict if there will be more West Nile cases as a result.
Last year there were nine confirmed cases in the state, with no deaths.
