A 21-year-old Cloquet man who was involved in a head-on crash last week near Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has been charged with texting while driving.
Garrett Allen Langenbrunner also was charged with inattentive driving and driving an uninsured vehicle Tuesday in Carlton County District Court.
The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. June 5 at 14th Street and John Road. When Cloquet police officers and Cloquet Area Fire District firefighters arrived, they found two vehicles in the southbound lane that had collided, according to Cloquet police.
Langenbrunner reportedly told police he caused the crash by looking down at his cell phone and texting while driving north on 14th Street. By the time he looked up, he noticed he was in the southbound lane and at that point crashed into a vehicle heading south, according to Cloquet police records.
The driver of the other car, Rhonda Stevenson, 52, was taken by ambulance with complaints of severe leg pain to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. Her 4-year-old granddaughter also was in the vehicle but was not injured, according to Cloquet police. Langenbrunner had minor scratches.
Langenbrunner has another pending traffic case in St. Louis County District Court. He’s accused of trying to parallel park when he struck an unattended vehicle on May 3. A police report said that the accident was witnessed by a DTA bus driver, and Langenbrunner faked calling 911 in front of the driver but never actually called.
He’s charged with failing to report the collision and failing to leave a note. He’s also charged with driving an uninsured vehicle. He’s pleaded not guilty to both charges and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 11.
