Richman was born and raised at Tower City, N.D. Upon graduation from Luther Seminary, he and his wife, Mavis, served as missionaries in Brazil from 1963 to 1974. Upon returning from Brazil, Richman served as associate pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church until he was called to be senior pastor at Emmaus Lutheran Church, Bloomington, Minn., in June 1978.
After the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989-91, Richman began full-time ministry in Eastern Europe in October 1992. He and a group organized an inter-Lutheran mission to Eastern Europe and Russia called East European Missions Network. They have sent hundreds of short-term missionaries and several full-time missionaries. EEMN helped establish two Bible schools and two Christian universities.
With the objective of helping rebuild the church of Jesus Christ in former Communist countries, he continues to travel to Eastern Europe and Russia.
