ND Dem leader: GOP lied about redistricting panel
The North Dakota House's Democratic leader says Republican House majority leader Al Carlson broke a promise when he named Democratic members of a state redistricting committee.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota House's Democratic leader says Republican House majority leader Al Carlson broke a promise when he named Democratic members of a state redistricting committee.
Jerry Kelsh says Carlson promised to allow House Democrats to pick their own members of the committee, and then he rejected their choices.
Kelsh wanted to put Grand Forks Rep. Corey Mock and Parshall Rep. Kenton Onstad on the panel.
Carlson said no. He eventually agreed to put Kelsh himself and Mayville Rep. Richard Holman on the committee.
Carlson says he didn't break his word. Carlson says he promised to let Kelsh pick the Democratic members as long as there was geographic balance.
Carlson says Grand Forks and Onstad's rural western district already had representatives on the 16-member committee.
