DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — Officials in one North Dakota county say they're being forced to spend too much money keeping their deputies in the courtroom, rather than on the road.

Deputies are required to provide security at the Stark County Courthouse, which is the main hub of the judicial system for southwest North Dakota and the site of hearings for eight counties.

Authorities say there has been a dramatic increase in court cases as a result of the recent oil boom.

Stark County commissioners say they can no longer afford to foot the bill. They want to charge other counties to help pay for security.

Stark County Sheriff Clarence Tuhy tells the Dickinson Press that the workload “is creating a situation” for the county.
