Paulson named DAC’s AD of the Year

Lawrie Paulson earned his third Dakota Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year Award on Monday, just don’t expect him to take any of the credit.

Jamestown College coaches are asked to wear multiple hats to make the program function properly and nobody understands that better than Paulson, who spent the last year splitting his time between his AD duties as well as serving as the school’s Director of Continuing Education.

“We’re lucky,” said Paulson, who has been the AD at JC since 2004 after a successful 19-year tenure as the head women’s basketball coach. “We have really good coaches, who bring in a lot of really good kids. That’s the formula for success in collegiate athletics.”

Paulson shared the award with Dickinson State’s Tim Daniel, who had the interim tag removed from his title in May after taking over for Roger Ternes, who took the same job at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Valley City State’s Dave Bass was named the DAC’s Faculty Athletic Representative of the Year.

Jamestown College finished third in the DAC Commissioner’s Cup standings this past season, and Paulson said there is no secret to the school’s success.

“It truly is a team effort, no question about it,” he said.

This year, head football coach Bud Etzold and head baseball coach Tom Hager took on additional responsibilities as associate ADs. And Paulson also singled out administrative assistant Connie Werbelow.

“In all honesty, coach Hager, coach Etzold and Connie really carried the ball on a day-to-day basis,” Paulson said. “If there was a job that needed to get done, they got it done, and did so very effectively.”
