The Jamestown city engineer is asking all residents to conserve water that enters the sewer system, according to a press release issued Wednesday.

The June 26 rain has severely loaded an already stressed portion of the sanitary sewer system. This is affecting about 35 to 40 percent of the system in all quadrants of the city.

Sewer flows through the main lift are averaging about 7.5 million gallons per day. This is within the systems capacity. However, five lift stations within the system are operating at or above capacity.

These include the No. 4 lift station near Mayer Truck Lines, the No. 8 lift station at the James River Bridge, the No. 10 lift station at the Tennis Courts, the No. 15 lift station on Second Avenue Northeast and the No. 9 lift station at the Jamestown Business Center.

Residents are urged to plug their basement floor drains, maintain the odd/even schedule of water use to conserve water that would enter the sewer system.

Residents in even-numbered homes are asked to perform heavy water use tasks such as laundry and dishwashing on even-numbered days. Odd-numbered homes can perform the tasks on odd-numbered days.

Residents are also reminded discharging sump pumps into the sanitary sewer system is prohibited by city ordinance.

Below is a video by NDSU Extension about how to plug drains.
