Carlson named Summit’s top-scholar athlete

NDSU track and field star Whitney Carlson has been named the 2010-11 Summit League’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The award is voted on by the league’s faculty athletic representatives and is the most prestigious honor given by the conference.

NDSU track and field star Whitney Carlson has been named the 2010-11 Summit League’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The award is voted on by the league’s faculty athletic representatives and is the most prestigious honor given by the conference.

Carlson, from Buchanan, is the top student in her graduating class, completing her degree in biology, while minoring in zoology and business administration.

Carlson finished her career with eight indoor Summit league championships, second-most in conference history, and eight outdoor titles.

She was the Summit League Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year this past season. She also earned NCAA All-American honors by placing fifth in the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa in June.
