Baumgartner light’s out as Mercs top Elks

Former UND pitcher Brandon Baumgartner struck out 10 batters in four hitless innings of relief as the Jamestown Merchants topped the Jamestown Elks 5-3 in a match-up of the state’s top amateur baseball teams in Fargo.
All eight runs were scored in the first four innings.
The Merchants got two in the top of the second and tacked on two more in the third to account for their total. The Elks got two in the bottom of the second and another in the fourth.
Bryan Erstad was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs to pace the Merchants’ 11-hit attack. Jared Purdy, Greg Lunski and Ryan Williams also added two hits. Williams had a double.
Lunski went the first five innings on the mound to get the win, while Baumgartner’s flawless outing earned him the save.
The Merchants are back in action on Wednesday when they play the Fargo-Moorhead Spartans at 7 p.m. in Fargo. They host the Merchants Tournament in Jamestown July 8-10.
