For a good cause: JCC washout won’t affect ACC tournament

The recent washout of two holes at Jamestown Country Club won’t keep the state’s longest running charity golf tournament from happening next month. The 29th Annual Anne Carlsen Center Benefit Golf Tournament will be played Aug. 6 at the Country Club, which had holes No. 6 and 7 washed away on Monday when a pond on a neighboring property washed out, sending water, rocks and debris across the course.

Kalen Ost, ACC marketing and communications specialist, compared this year’s situation to a similar scenario in 2009 when high river along the James River plagued the course.

“It’s kind of a hurry-up-and-wait approach to just about everything,” he said. “I feel terrible about what happened out there, not only for the tournament, but anybody who’s a golf fan. It will be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully the weather comes out in our favor.

“The staff out there is great to work with and they’re very flexible. They know what they’re doing.”

The tournament is a key fundraiser for the Center. The money raised helps support about 25 teens with disabilities and their participation during TechnoCamp at Elks Camp Grassick, which is located five miles south of Dawson, N.D.

“Every year I go it’s kind of a re-energizer because the kids that are there, their faces are almost breaking they’re smiling so hard,” Ost said. “It’s the highlight of the summer for them.”

The tournament, which features 36, 4-person teams, began in 1982 or as Ost cleverly put it, “it’s as nearly as old as I am.”

The tournament, which features scratch and handicap divisions, also includes hole contests, a $40,000 hole-in-one contest and a $25,000 putting contest.

The tournament is a major undertaking, requiring “tons” of hours from staff and volunteers.

A social will be held Aug. 5, the day before the tournament, for players, families and sponsors.

To register call 952-5167 or go to www.annecenter.org. Even though the tournament is still a month away, they’re still looking for help.

“A lot of people volunteer and kind of go the extra mile to make this a successful event every year, and we’re very appreciative of that,” Ost said. “But having one more person never hurts.”
